Breaking Down the Barriers to Healthcare Innovation: A Junior Doctor's Story
Follow the journey of a junior doctors journey to fill the UK NHS with digital health innovation. Having worked for the NHS since the age of 18, Dr Michael Watts felt that the ability to undertake medical leadership and management as a junior doctor was difficult, and the imposter syndrome was real. This short account of the years that followed demonstrates how determination met opportunity, and Michael was lucky enough to found a company with software engineers that has organically become one of the fastest growing digital health start-ups in the UK. Exploring building the perfect team, finding the right funding, and breaking down NHS procurement / commercial barriers, this talk is hoped to inspire many audience members to undertake the same path as Michael.

The Sisyphean MedTech Challenge: a post-covid paradigm shift or the same but more urgent?
It has never been particularly easy for medtech developers to get products adopted by the NHS. There appeared to be a myriad of hurdles to jump; a maze of bureaucracy to navigate. And even when you knew the way, the journey could be long and difficult. And then came a pandemic. The NHS had to adapt and respond to the huge challenge and do so at scale and pace. Now there is a lot of talk of a post-pandemic world; of new regulations; of supported risk taking and maximising technological potentials.
But have things actually changed? What are the new challenges facing the NHS and how can technology support them. In this presentation Dan will consider if the NHS has really changed post-pandemic in terms of its appetite to adopt new technology.

MedTalk Podcast Live - Addressing the Challenges Presented by the Current Medical Device Regulatory Environment.
With the regulatory environment changing all of the time, three panellists will share their thoughts on the regulations currently having the most effect on medical device companies, and how they can be navigated.

Topics include:
  • Regulation changes in recent years including some of the most pressing regulations: MDR/IVDR UK regulations in light of Brexit – e.g. Medicines and Medical Devices Bill – what’s really changed?
  • The worldwide outlook
  • Healthcare regulatory environment in EMEA
  • The impact of COVID on regulations
  • Other pressing regulations: AI in the medical device sector
  • Taxation & IR35
  • Upcoming changes
  • Technology use in clinical trials and the regulations that effect it
  • How to learn from pharma ... How can medical device companies get ahead of the curve?
  • What are medical device companies perhaps not doing that they can learn from pharma?

Manufacturing 5.0: Using Sustainable Modular Automation for use in the Healthcare Sector
Industry 4.0 showed us the importance of smart manufacturing and automation. This allowed the industry to take a giant leap into the future making manufacturing ultra-efficient with big data, the integration of IoT and interoperability. Industry 5.0 looks beyond efficiency and productivity, setting the foundation for a transition to a more human-centric, sustainable, and flexible manufacturing. For the healthcare industry, microfactories will play a critical role in enabling flexibility for sustainable scalability.

Artificial Intelligence and Connected Healthcare

Connected healthcare has benefitted many of us in numerous ways, from remote monitoring to care and support through Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data-Centric Healthcare. AI and Machine Learning have long been touted as the revolutionary technology that will transform the way we live. It is being incorporated in every aspect of our lives at an ever-increasing pace. Healthcare and medical devices are no exception to this general trend, with many applications from diagnostics and smart imaging systems to robotics and digital surgery. Intelligent distributed medical systems, however, pose significant challenges from the device level to data management, security, and regulatory compliance. This talk provides an overview of the subject, the recent advances, challenges, and direction of travel.

The role of AR in lap training
Surgical errors account for 46% of medical errors, with inadequate surgical training highlighted as a cause. Laparoscopic surgery is a complex, MIS procedure which can significantly reduce risk and offer benefits. Despite this, the specific set of skills requires a prolonged learning curve. Training modalities including human cadavers, box trainers, VR simulators and AR simulators, carry with it their own sets of benefits and limitations. AR can superimpose digital images and physical models, hence has the unique advantage of combining visual realism with haptic feedback. This study aims to determine the suitability of AR simulation for laparoscopic training through systematic literature review. 26 papers were extracted and compiled. Both the available products as well as the technology as an educational modality was evaluated. Current simulators vary in price, modules, assessment metrics and feedback methods. When compared with other modalities AR provided faster skill acquisition and was widely preferred. Whether it is worth incorporating into the curricula depends upon its effectiveness which can be determined through its ability to aid skill acquisition, user opinion and justification of its cost. Currently not enough information is available to draw a decisive conclusion. Research and development strategies to explore a wider variety of simulators and modules as well as assessment on mental workload would overcome this limitation. AR simulation has the potential to become the new gold standard for laparoscopic surgical training pending further development of literature and technological evolution to increase clinical realism.
