Ultrasound transducers play a critical role in clinics and are routinely relied upon for accurate imaging. Their performance is known to deteriorate over time and regular inspections are necessary which cost money and affect the patient waiting list. A potential alternative involves the rapid analysis of reverberation patterns for a transducer operating in-air, but a deeper understanding of the images produced is needed. Can detailed computer simulations be used to help clinical engineers? By modelling common transducer defects, we can predict the reverberation pattern produced by an in-air test, providing the basis for rapid and low-cost fault detection.
